We often hear that anxiety is “all in your head”, but that could not be further from the truth.
Yes, it begins with the racing thoughts and constant worry. But anxiety does not stay in the mind. It moves through the body: the racing heart, the tight chest, the stomach pain, and the shaky hands. These are real physical signs, not just random reactions.
To truly understand anxiety, we need to see it as a full-body experience. It’s not just something you think, but something you deeply feel.
So, what is anxiety exactly?
Anxiety is a natural response to stress, like your body’s built-in alarm system, that is meant to protect you. Think of it as a smoke detector that goes off when it senses danger. The problem is, in today’s world, that alarm can be triggered by things that are not life-threatening, such as looming deadlines, social pressure, overthinking, or the fear of making mistakes.
Much like a smoke detector that keeps beeping when there’s no fire, anxiety can keep your body on constant alert, and over time, that can really take its toll.
The Physical Side of Anxiety
Anxiety is often misunderstood as simply “feeling worried,” but it goes much deeper, and it often begins in the body before the mind catches up. For many people, anxiety is something they feel physically long before they can put it into words. You might notice:
- Tightness or pain in the chest
- Shallow or fast breathing
- A racing heartbeat
- Sweating or chills
- Nausea or stomach discomfort
- Muscle tension, jaw clenching or unexplained aches
- Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
Some people also experience trembling, a lump in the throat, or pins and needles. These sensations can be frightening, especially if you don’t know what’s causing them. When anxiety is long-term, your body remains in a constant state of “fight or flight”. This heightened alertness can wear you down, both physically and emotionally.
It is more than just stress; it is a full-body response. Recognising these signs is an important step towards managing anxiety and finding relief.
What helps?
If you are dealing with physical symptoms of anxiety, there are a few things you can try to ease them:
- Breathing Exercises
When we are anxious, we tend to breathe quickly and shallowly, which can make everything feel worse. Try slow, deep breaths; in for 4 counts, hold for 4, out for 4. Do it a few times and notice your body start to relax.
- Grounding Techniques
Sometimes we need to bring ourselves back to the here and now. A simple way to do that is to use your senses. Find 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste. It helps break the cycle of anxious thoughts and physical symptoms.
- Gentle Movement
You don’t need a workout; just a short walk, a few stretches, or some light movement can help release built-up tension and lift your mood.
- Talk About It
Speaking to someone who understands, even if it’s just over the phone, can ease the weight on your chest. Mindful Ummah’s helpline offers faith-based, culturally sensitive support to anyone who needs a safe, non-judgemental space.
Feeling it in your chest, your breath, your thoughts? Let’s gently guide your mind back to calm.
